Detailed description of Shackamaxon Golf & Country Club

Shackamaxon Golf & Country Club is a Private 18 hole golf course located in Scotch Plains, New Jersey.

Shackamaxon Golf & Country Club first opened for play on September 3rd, 1916. The course was designed by A.W. Tillinghast. In later years the course would be restored / rennovated by Stephen Kay

Most of the game's top players came to Shackamaxon in September 1955 to compete in the first Cavalcade of Golf, a brand new PGA Tour event. The $50,000 purse was the second largest purse the pros would play for all year, while the $10,000 first place winnings would be twice that of any other previous winnings for a tour event on the east coast. The PGA reported that 80% of the top money winners on tour played in the event. Some of the players in the event were Gene Littler, Jerry Barber, Gene Sarazen, Johnny Farrell and Jack Fleck the defending U.S. Open champion. The eventual winner of the tournament was Dr. Cary Middlecoff who beat the legendary Sam Sneed by two shots.

Par for the course is 71. From the back tees the course plays to 6,709 yards. From the White tees the course measures 6,389 yards.

Shackamaxon Golf & Country Club was built on hilly terrain, so expect uneven lies on the tree-lined fairways. All the greens and tee boxes are elevated. The signature hole is #9, a 396-yard (White tees), par 4, requiring two lengthy shots in order to reach the green in regulation. #9 was one of Tillinghast's first "island" greens and has been rated by the Metropolitan Golf Association as the toughest ninth hole in the area.

Providing an exceptional golf experience while preserving and enhancing the original concepts of this classic golf course has long been a major part of the Shackamaxon culture. Caddies are mandatory if you choose to walk the course.
